Young People's Outreach Project Muheza

The Young People's Outreach Project was born from the passion of Muheza Hospice to support its children and young people. Inspired by the incredible work that takes place in Tanzania, Karilyn Collins and Emma Speedy conspired to give seven young people from Herefordshire an opportunity of a life time.

In August 2019 Eleri, Henry, Lauren, Sarah, Morgan, Libby and Izzy will be travelling to Tanzania to meet children and young people supported by Muheza Hospice. They will spend over a week getting to know one another, learning about each other's hospice's and sharing their experiences of losing a loved one. The YPO team will help at support groups, work in the hospice itself, and also plan a trip for 100 of Muheza Hospice's children to the beach for the day, providing some respite and joy to children experiencing bereavement and living with HIV.

We believe that children and young people's voice deserve to be heard, that their experiences of loss and grief have value and that by sharing their stories more young people will have the confidence to get the support they need. Our brave seven young people are here to tell their stories so that other young people might be heard, and offer an emotional connection that goes beyond language, countries and the equator.

Our Project Aims:

·      For young people of Herefordshire to make meaningful connections with children of Muheza, to share experiences, understanding and empathy

·      To raise awareness of childhood bereavement and share personal stories with others

·      To contribute to the support for the children and young people of Muheza

·      To organise an activity trip for Muheza children and young people

·      To role model youth volunteering

·      To raise awareness of Muheza Hospice

  • To strengthen the link between St. Michael's Hospice and Muheza Hospice

In order to achieve our aims each team member needs to raise £2000 to pay for their trip and provide a large donation to Muheza hospice. Follow their fundraising story and help them on their way! - To donate follow the links on the team members page.

About the Project
Leader

In 2001 Dr Karilyn Collins, a palliative care physician from the UK, and her husband Dr Richard Collins a general physician, went to work in Teule hospital Muheza. Richard became the hospital medical superintendent and senior physician.

Karilyn, who could see a huge need for palliative care within the hospital and the community, founded Muheza Hospice Care.

Karilyn has supported the children and young people’s service at St. Michael’s Hospice since its inception in 2003 and still volunteers her time for children’s support groups.

Karilyn also worked as a hospice doctor for St. Michael’s Hospice.

It is Karilyn’s passion that has sparked this project and it’s with her will and ambition that all of this is possible.

In 2014 Emma Speedy started working in St. Michael's Hospice Hereford as a social worker with the children and families team. She supported young lives affected by the illness or loss of a loved one.

After a visit from Edgar, Muheza Hospice's social worker who runs their kids club; Emma had an idea! Inspired by the stories of the children and young people needing support in Muheza, and the courage, strength and ambition of those she worked with at St. Michael's Hospice; Emma developed the YPO project Muheza. A project where young people could come together from across the equator to share mutual compassion and understanding of what it means to lose someone you love.
